We are deeply moved to announce that, after a year-long process, photographs from Zofia Rydet’s series Sociological Record have been officially acquired by the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
This marks one of the most significant moments in the international recognition of the artist’s work and an important milestone in the global presence of Polish photography. The inclusion of these works in the MoMA collection confirms the exceptional importance of Sociological Record as one of the most important documentary projects of the 20th century.

The exhibition “Zofia Rydet. Sociological Record,” curated by Clare Grafik and Karol Hordziej, was presented at The Photographers’ Gallery in London at the turn of 2025–2026, where it met with great success.
In the context of this exhibition, attention was also drawn to Zofia Rydet’s journey to the Balkans, when she visited Albania in 1960, at the last moment before the country became completely isolated from the rest of the world. During this trip, she took several hundred photographs documenting everyday life and the social landscape, including many portraits that later became part of the series “The Little Man” and “The Passing Time.”
Selected works were presented as an additional section of the exhibition at the Photography Museum in Shkodër, where they attracted significant public interest and became an important point of reference for local audiences.

Thanks to the initiative and support of the Social Archive Centre, in 2023 the Zofia Rydet Foundation submitted an application for the inclusion of the “Sociological Record” series on the Polish National UNESCO List. To our great joy and satisfaction, the Polish UNESCO Committee approved it.
On 26 June 2024, a certificate confirming this honourable distinction was presented to President Maria Sokół-Augustyńska.
We would like to thank all those who contributed to the development and promotion, together with us, of this invaluable work, the “Record”! This is the culmination of the efforts of a large team of people, but above all a recognition of the value of Rydet’s work—steadfast and consistent throughout many years of artistic practice, the result of which is an extraordinary document of a bygone era.

How will Zofia Rydet’s photographs sound in the musical interpretation of Marcin Masecki? We invite you to a screening of images from the photographer’s archive combined with an improvised concert by the pianist, as well as a meeting dedicated to her work.
The occasion for the event is the inclusion of Zofia Rydet’s photographic series “Sociological Record” on the Polish National UNESCO Memory of the World List.
The event will take place on 14 July at 8:00 p.m. at Plac Zabaw nad Wisłą. Admission is free!

The exhibition was presented in the beautiful setting of the granary from Wilków, located on the grounds of the Museum of the Radom Village. The selection of photographs from Zofia Rydet’s most important series, “Sociological Record 1978–1990,” was made by the exhibition curator, Sebastian Klochowicz.
It included several dozen photographs from different regions of Poland and from various sub-series of the Sociological Record. Alongside the canonical “People in Interiors”, there are also “Windows,” “Televisions,” “Occupations,” “Objects and Decorations,” “Monids,” and “Women on Doorsteps.”

In a letter to the editor of the monthly magazine Polska, Rydet wrote: “I do not know whether I truly managed to speak, even a little, in defence of the little human being. I am afraid that the general public will view it [the exhibition] as they do other, more or less good albums—judging the photographs as good or bad, without reflection and without reading Korczak’s beautiful texts. If that were the case, it would be my failure, because I wanted to speak through content, to force reflection not on the image itself, but on the problem.”

The title of the exhibition was taken from “Conversations on Photography 1970–1990” by Krystyna Łyczywek. Zofia Rydet wrote: “I am convinced that I am following the right path – I still have so many plans, only a little too little life ahead of me.”
The curatorial selection presented as broad a cross-section of the artist’s work as possible. The exhibition included fragments of the following series: Traces, The Little Human Being, Time of Passing, The World of Feelings and Imagination, Transformations, Epitaph, Infinity of Distant Roads, Documentations, and Sociological Record.
Referring to the nature of the selected works, the exhibition focused on three main themes: the motif of the road, transience, and contrasts.

The time of isolation, this moment of closure that we are all now experiencing, has made Sociological Record by Zofia Rydet even more moving and vivid today. As we wander through our interiors, constantly looking at the same objects, we begin to see more than just things. We see the time we live in, our values, our social status, our dreams. The Gwangju Biennale is one of the most important artistic events in the world and the leading event of its kind in Asia. Each edition attracts over 1.5 million visitors, including members of the art world—curators, collectors, art enthusiasts, and artists from across the globe.
During the 13th edition, held this year under the title “Minds Rising, Spirits Tuning,” seven works by Zofia Rydet from the series “The World of Feelings and Imagination” are being presented. Curator Natasha Ginwala first encountered the artist’s work in 2019 during a study visit to Poland organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.

In the works shown together here by Rafał Bujnowski (1974–), Peter Puklus (1980–) and Zofia Rydet (1911–1997), what is vital is the very process of transformation, and the accompanying ambivalence, the temperature of interpersonal relations and the potential of the human hands from the title. Launch of a New Section of the – “Documentations 1950–1978”

Since December 2018, a new section of Zofia Rydet’s digitised archive has been available online. It features photographs taken by Zofia Rydet between 1950 and 1978. This period of the artist’s work — which includes outstanding series such as Little Man and The Passing of Time — has been titled “Documentations.” We present nearly 7,000 previously unknown photographs taken throughout Poland.
The project was co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the Digital Culture 2017 programme.

“Folk Film Festiwal – Festiwal Filmów Wiejskich – to pierwszy w kraju i jeden z niewielu na świecie festiwal filmowy poświęcony tematyce ludowej. Od ponad stu lat, czyli od wynalezienia sposobu na utrwalanie scen ruchomych, wieś dostarcza twórcom filmowym wciąż nowych inspiracji. Folklor społeczności wiejskiej jest stale obecny w kinie polskim. Pomysł na stworzenie festiwalu zrodził się z pasji do kina i naturalnej potrzeby promocji polskiej kultury ludowej, ale także z zainteresowania innymi dziedzinami sztuki. Stąd obecność w Sianowie zespołów muzycznych, teatrów ulicznych, rękodzielników i fotografów, którym udało się uwiecznić emocje spotkań i rozmów o wszystkich wymiarach wsi polskiej. “Pierwsze po wielu latach spotkanie dwóch wyjątkowych osobowości polskiej sztuki, dla których fotografia – na różne sposoby – była środkiem rejestracji i uwznioślenia codzienności. Dla obojga intrygujące było przede wszystkim to, co autentyczne, a źródeł owej autentyczności poszukiwali daleko poza centrami miast. Na wystawie pokazane zostaną wyimki z „Notatnika fotograficznego” Władysława Hasiora – w postaci fotoreportaży publikowanych w latach 80. ubiegłego wieku na łamach tygodnika „Nowa wieś” oraz teka fotograficzna Zofii Rydet poświęcona Zalipiu. Tytuł „Malowane domy” odnosi się nie tylko do wspólnych tematów ich prac, ale również podobnej, zarazem dokumentalnej i metaforycznej, strategii posługiwania się obrazem fotograficznym”.

Ważne słowo, które przeżywa w dzisiejszym świecie wielką i momentami bolesną modernizację. Dawniej było to miejsce, w którym się dorastało, do którego się przynależało i którego za cenę życia należało bronić. Była twierdzą, gdzie mówiono w jednym języku, czczono lokalnego boga i hołdowano tradycji, szanowanej na równi z rytuałami religijnymi. Ten model – dający poczucie osadzenia, ale również izolacji – opierał się na wykluczeniu i radykalnie dzielił ludzi na naszych i obcych. Sprawdzało się to do momentu, kiedy ludzkość zaczęła się intensywnie przemieszczać. Pewne próby podważenia izolacyjnego modelu ojczyzny podjęło Cesarstwo Rzymskie, potem Cesarstwo Austro-Węgierskie. W obu przypadkach narody „zaproszone” były zbyt przywiązane do identyfikacji ojczyźnianej, aby dać się skusić przynależnością do mocarstwa. Dopiero Unia Europejska zbudowała model ojczyzny opartej na zasadzie pełnej zgody – wręcz ochoty – na przynależność. O wystawie

“…Rydet bywa współcześnie, zbyt pochopnie, oceniana przez pryzmat cyklu: Zapis socjologiczny, którego wartość wywodzi się z narracji właściwej dla społecznie zaangażowanej sztuki krytycznej, abstrahując od wartości artystycznej samych prac w nim zawartych. Na wystawie mogliśmy zobaczyć także prace z innych cykli Rydet, które w swej profetyczności są jak baśniowe teodycee, będące przeczuciem naiwnej epifanii współczesnego, eklektycznego świata. Od grudnia 2017 można oglądać nową część zdigitalizowanego archiwum Zofii Rydet. Jest to część fotografii wykonanych przez Zofie Rydet w latach 1950-1978. Ten okres twórczości artystki, z którego wywodzą się min. znakomite cykle jak „Mały człowiek” czy „Czas przemijania”, nazwano „Dokumentacjami”. Prezentujemy prawie 7 tys. nieznanych dotąd fotografii wykonanych na Śląsku (Katowice, Bytom i okolice, Gliwice i Ziemia Gliwicka). Projekt został dofinansowany ze środków Ministerstwa Kultury i Dziedzictw Narodowego w ramach programu Kultura Cyfrowa 2017.

Tegoroczna edycja Festiwalu odbywa się pod hasłem „Tożsamość”. Tożsamość postrzegana, jako środowisko, w którym żyjemy, małe społeczności tworzące to środowisko, ale także w węższej perspektywie – tożsamości jednostki. Wokół tematu przewodniego odbywać się będą wystawy oraz spotkania z gośćmi. Organizowane są także warsztaty fotografii portretowej i spacer fotograficzny.

Z okazji Dnia Kobiet 8 marca 2017 roku, Ośrodek Kultury, Sportu i Biblioteka Publiczna Gminy Pruszcz Gdański zorganizował „Wielki zjazd kobiet” i z tej okazji zaprezentował wystawę fotograficzną pt. „Być jak Zofia Rydet”. Do projektu zaproszono fotografików, zawodowców lub amatorów z terenu gminy. Zadaniem było stworzenie portretów kobiet z gminy Pruszcz Gdański we wnętrzu, w mieszkanie lub miejscu pracy. Fotografie czarno-białe, przedstawiające całą postać i nawiązująea stylistyką do prac Zofii Rydet z jej cyklu „Zapis socjologiczny”, zostały pokazane obok kilku prac mistrzyni.

“Wspólna wystawa Zofii Rydet (1911-1997) i Anety Grzeszykowskiej (ur. 1974) to pokaz dwóch artystek, które wykorzystują aparat fotograficzny do konstruowania przejmujących i bogatych retorycznie obrazów kobiecego ciała. Na pierwszy plan tego mniej dotąd dyskutowanego, choć centralnego dla twórczości obu tematu, wysuwają się dwa wymiary wizerunku kobiety: tożsamościowy i egzystencjalny. Nośnikiem wpisanych weń emocji i czasu jest ciało oraz jego wierzchnia warstwa – skóra. Zarówno Rydet, jak i Grzeszykowska przepracowują portret kobiecy w sposób indywidualny i wykraczający poza obiegowe konwencje. Wystawa oficjalnie inauguruje współpracę Rastra z Fundacją im. Wystawa w Muzeum w Tychach prezentuje wyimek [Zapisu socjologicznego], przeciwstawiający dwa bliskie regiony, Podhale i Śląsk: choć w obu przypadkach domy i mieszkania wypełniają święte obrazy, wszystko je poza tym różni. Śląsk jest poukładany i jasny, Podhale ciemne, przedwieczne. W obu przypadkach – choć zdjęcia należą do szeroko rozumianej współczesności – obraz przedstawia coś zastanawiająco odległego: kraj, którego już nie ma. Wojciech Nowicki, autor wyboru zdjęć i eseju pisze: „W tych panach przestrzeni, możnowładcach osadzonych na mieszkaniach czy chałupach jest jakiś rys wielkości, nienaruszalna moc ludzi, którzy mogą wszystko: własne otoczenie kształtują jak im się podoba, choć, to też trudno przeoczyć, im są starsi, tym trudniej im walczyć z mnożącymi się przedmiotami. Zapis jest również historią ludzi opowiedzianą przez towarzyszące im przedmioty, które przyrastają z czasem, by w końcu niemal ich zatopić”. Wydawnictwo jest rezultatem projektu badawczego zajmującego się Zapisem Socjologicznym. Wzięły w nim udział: Fundacja Zofii Rydet, Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej, Fundacja Sztuk Wizualnych oraz Muzeum w Gliwicach. Album zawiera niemal 200 zdjęć, w tym część nigdy przez Zofię Rydet nie wykorzystanych oraz ilustrowane kalendarium życia artystki. Kup online
